May 8, 2008
From the Desk of the Divas
True to form, it has been another busy week with The Raw Divas! As many of you already know, last weekend Tera hopped a train for Albany where the handsome Tim VanOrden picked her up in his RawRunning Mobile and headed to Manhattan to the Choco Rave with the We like It Raw team and friends, in honor of Tim’s 40th birthday. Saturday night, the team was joined by Amy for a cozy dinner at Pure Food and Wine.
The day The Raw Divas don their lipstick and high heels for a night on the town is something to be celebrated in Divaland! A great time was had by all, and it was a pleasure finally meeting Dhrumil, Philip, Tim and the rest of the crew in person!
Kiwi Kisses, Customer Service Queen, Keely did a wonderful job of holding the fort up while the two founding divas snuck away, and now we're pleased to be returning the favour while Keely and Bob take a raw food tour of New England to visit Alissa Cohen's new restaurant, Grezzo, in Massachusettes. We're not sure if they'll actually make it to dinner though, since they're stopping in Salem on the way and we have a feeling that judging by Keely's Halloween blog last October, she might just like it there!
Mother's day is coming quickly, so this issue of HHH is all about taking care of YOU! The Raw Divas know that a happy, pampered mom, makes for a happy, loving home, but all too often, it's the woman of the house who continuously puts herself last. So this week, we're reminding you that taking care of yourself is exactly what your family needs and we've got the treats to help get you started!
Don't be shy! It's your turn to invest in yourself and your family will thank you for it!

In Diva program news, Wow! Say Goodbye to cancer cells, cellulite and “fat pants”!
Talk about transformation! If you haven't yet peeked at the blog and seen the stories that came in from the last round of our 30 Day Body Enlightenment System, then it’s time to take a peek!
In our next session, Head’s up for Moms! Prepare your cucumber-fearing spouses and children for the fact that our next Body Enlightenment System is guaranteed to be a booster for the family’s overall health!
But HURRY, because we learned the hard way that we cannot overfill our classes. The buck stops at 60 new participants and registrations close on May the 9th.
We’ll be defying the body building protein myths and catching up with Raw Mom, Jinjee Talifero for an exclusive question and answer marathon call about motherhood and pregnancy on the raw food diet!

Juicy Diva Treats: Low-Fruit Summery Green Smoothie
By Marica
2 Battavia lettuce leaves (our stores aren't doing organic romaine at the moment sadly!)
2 celery stalks
1 yellow pepper
Half a Cucumber
Bunch of parsley
Bunch of Mint
Juice of 1 lime
Blend together - with herbs and lettuce at the bottom, then celery, pepper and finally the cucumber and the lime (make the lime the "very last" thing you add as it loses its taste too quickly otherwise I feel). Yummy or what! A handful of ice would make it extra summery.

Job Opening! Are you a web-savvy diva?
The divas are growing exponentially and so is Amy’s belly in preparation for our youngest raw diva’s arrival. The combination of the two mean that we need a web-savvy diva (or a diva-loving guy) on our team and helping us to make things happen.
We’d love to see Amy cuddling her muffins and freeing up some time to get back to the more creative stuff we've got going on, so if you think you might be able to help us setting up some of our webpage, etc., let us know.

Pamper Yourself! Beauty Tips for Healthy, Younger Looking Skin
By Tracy Neely
Soothing Lip Salve
Our lips take a beating every day without us fully being aware of how delicate they are. The skin on our lips is actually mucous membrane and because our lips do not have oil glands, we have to do all we can to nourish and moisturize them often. There are many causes of cracked, dry lips including allergic reaction to cosmetics (matte lipsticks tend to be pretty drying to our lips as well as the dyes used in the coloring of the lip sticks and lip glosses), skin infections (some people, who have eczema, also suffer with peeling on the lips), and extreme weather conditions (excess sun exposure, during the summer months tend to produce sunburn, but this can be protected by wearing an SPF lip balm when outdoors).
Beeswax
Beeswax is a substance secreted by worker honeybees for building a honeycomb. This wax has the ability to soften and nourish the skin.
Sweet Almond Oil
This is one of the most useful, practical, and commonly used carrier oils. It is great for all skin types as an acting emollient and is best known for its ability to soften, soothe, and re-condition the skin.
Honey
Honey is a by-product of honey bees when they collect the flower nectar in their mouths and the nectar mixes with enzymes and then it is turned into honey. Honey is a natural humectant that attracts and binds water to the upper layers of the skin.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha piperita) is extracted by steam distillation from the fresh or partly dried peppermint plant. On the skin, peppermint oil is used to relieve skin irritation and itchiness and also helps to reduce skin redness, where inflammation is present. It is used for dermatitis, acne, ringworm, scabies and pruritus and also relieves itching, sunburn and inflammation of the skin, while at the same time having a cooling action. This oil in small concentrations is very soothing in lip care recipes.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil, True Lavender (L.angustufolia) is extensively cultivated in France and Bulgaria and is the most common commercially grown aromatic member of the Lamiaceae family. Lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and stalks of L. angustifolia. Lavender oil is widely known for its wound healing properties and with caution can be used on the skin neat. Lavender Essential oil is generally used in skin care for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic and calming properties.
Calendula Oil
Calendula Oil is classified as macerated or infused oil, where the calendula flowers is infused in oil, particularly cold pressed olive oil and the flowers then removed, leaving the oil with some of the properties of the botanical material. Calendula oil has great healing, soothing and softening qualities which makes it a good choice to include when using massage oil or when preparing carrier oil for a skin care blend.
Recipe
2 ½ tsp Beeswax
7 tsp Sweet Almond Oil
1 tsp Honey
2 drops peppermint essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
3 tsp calendula oil
Place beeswax, sweet almond oil, honey and calendula oil in heat-safe measuring cup or bowl and place in double boiler, or a medium saucepan of water over low heat. Allow hot water to melt ingredients, but prevent from boiling, remove from heat immediately and add essential oils. Stir entire mixture until all ingredients are well combined. Once mixture has solidified, pour into lip balm tin and allow to cool completely, uncovered, before sealing or using.
Luxurious Body Butter
Shea Butter
Shea Butter comes from the Karite Nut Tree which originates in the semi-arid savannas of West and Central Africa. The Karite Nut tree, which can live for 300 years, is often dubbed the “tree of life” by African women who make this precious butter by hand. It is completely non-toxic and gentle and the fruity part of the nut, when crushed, yields a vegetable oil that can be used in soap-making, cooking, skin and hair care. Shea butter is one of nature’s greatest moisturizers and has a vast number of proven healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The high level of vegetable fats found in shea butter contributes to its ability to heal burns and wounds and to promote cell regeneration and capillary circulation. It is commonly used in the treatment of eczema, rashes and severely dry skin.
Organic Cocoa Butter
Cocoa Butter also called theobroma oil means 'food of the gods'. Cocoa butter is the natural fat extracted from the cacao bean. In the raw food world, raw cacao is used in tasty desserts. The moisturizing abilities of cocoa butter are frequently recommended for prevention of stretch marks in pregnant women, treatment of chapped skin and lips, and as a daily moisturizer to prevent dry, itchy skin. Cocoa Butter besides being a natural preservative contains natural antioxidants that give it a long shelf life of over 3 years. It is naturally rich in Vitamin E as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals. Vitamin E helps to soothe, hydrate, and balance the skin and also assist with wrinkles and other signs of ageing.
Jasmine Essential Oil
Jasmine Essential Oil (J. Sambac) has a long history of cultivation in India. In India, jasmine is known as “Queen of the Night” because the scent is stronger during the hours of darkness. Jasmine absolute is obtained by solvent extraction via the concrete from the flowers of J. sambac. The jasmine flowers open in the early morning and there is a rapid and significant loss of essential oil once the buds have opened. Because the flowers are so delicate, they are usually picked by hand. Dried jasmine flowers from J. Sambac are used as an ingredient of Chinese Jasmine tea. Although Jasmine can be used on any skin type it is particularly good for hot, dry sensitive skins especially where there is redness and itching. Jasmine is soothing and calming to the skin and is a valuable addition to any skin care cream.
Recipe
8 tbsp shea butter
8 tbsp cocoa butter
5 drops jasmine essential oil
Add the shea butter and the cocoa butter to the top of a double boiler and heat until the wax and cocoa butter have melted. Remove the pan from the heat and add the drops of jasmine essential oil. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Pour into a container and set aside to cool. Apply to the body when you want an intensive moisturizer for the skin. Store body butter in a cool dry area.
Enjoy!!
